Dicing with Death: Central Africa, At Your Own Risk

In this acclaimed series, we journey on some of the world’s most dangerous routes and explore the lengths people go to in order to change their destinies.

The Central African Republic, a country with a long standing history of political instability, has been destabilised further still by civil war. The country’s wealth of natural resources leaves no room for doubt around the inequality within their society – any remnants of these riches are few and far between in the arduous lives of the population.

Cities like Ngoto are completely cut off from the world… with the exception of the one road leading into the city, shunned even by ambulances. Medical support now comes in the form of the occasional reluctant motorcycle – it becomes a race against the clock, or rather a race against death

Whether by truck, motorbike or boat, in order to obtain food, medical care or sell their goods, the life of Central Africans is littered with obstacles. But whatever happens, the 6 million Central Africans repeat their mantra: “However long the night, the sun will rise”.
