Kenya: A Country of Contrasts

Kenya is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Africa but behind the tourist brochures lies a country of stark contrasts.

In Nairobi, 60% of the population live in slums. Gang warfare reigns supreme, leaving many too scared to venture outside their own homes. The most feared group is the Mungiki. More a religion or cult than a gang, the Mungiki have their own ritual of baptism and rob and kill with impunity. In a rare interview, a member describes how they target and abduct tourists. In the first six months of 2009, more than 200 people were kidnapped.

In Kenya’s famous national parks, tribes that were evicted thirty years ago are now fighting for the right to return home. It’s not the facet of Kenya the government and the tour operators want the world to see. Can any kind of harmony be achieved in this troubled state?
