Legendary Cities: Saint Louis

A spectacular documentary series looking at the most beautiful cities in the world.

The city of Saint Louis in Senegal is steeped in history. Its name itself pays homage to Louis XIV. The French founded this strategically located trading post in the 17th century.

Sailors and fisherman, past and present, have learnt to cope with the treacherous waters of the Atlantic Ocean. Nowadays, this port is bustling with trade and commerce. Gold, rubber and also the slave trade contributed to the prosperous economy of Saint Louis.

The Faidherbe Bridge, constructed in the 19th century, reminds us of the period when the city was the colonial capital of French West Africa.

Saint Louis is now the second biggest city in Senegal; immensely proud of its history and culture.
