Australia: The New Wild West

The region of Kagoorlie in Australia, is not only home to one of the biggest gold mines in the world, it holds huge amounts of gold in its terrain. This attracts thousands of people like Hugo, who patrol the red earth with their detectors, hoping to find a nugget that will make them rich. The region is also the only place in Australia where prostitution is legal, and ’skimpies’ in the bars earn hundreds of dollars a night in tips.

Every year, thousands of backpackers arrive Down Under in search of a new life in the outdoors. Max and Aurélie, a young couple from Lyon have come to live as modern day cowboys on a ranch, but mastering horses and realising this dream isn’t going to be as easy as they thought. Guy is a real cowboy, as well as a rodeo rider and travels 10 hours to a competition where he has to hold on for 8 seconds to make it through the to the national championship. We also look into the tragic spiral of aborigines, who make up 20% on prison inmates.
