Brazil: Beef, Bibles and Bullets

The election of President Jair Bolsonaro was made possible by support from three powerful groups – large landowners, evangelical clergy and the military.

The far-right President received support from three groups that have been united with Parliament for many years – large landowners, evangelical clerics and the military. They have been nicknamed the “BBBs”: Beef, Bibles and Bullets. Holding particularly retrograde values on the traditional family structure, the BBBs are in vehement opposition to abortion rights and gay marriage. They do support, however, the right to bear firearms and the destruction of the Amazonian rainforest for the benefit of agro-business. It is indeed to the “BBBs” in Brazilian society, that Jair Bolsonaro owes his victory and continuing support throughout his presidency.
