But the Filipino and Indonesian domestic workers who come here in search of a better future often end up living in slums and facing violence from their wealthy patrons.
At night some parts of the city are controlled by the Triads. This mafia holds entire neighborhoods through fear. They have control over trafficking, prostitution and, surprisingly cinema.
People in Hong Kong are also concerned that Beijing will restrict freedoms and impose its leadership in the 2017 elections. Faced with this threat thousands of pro-democracy protesters took to the streets in occasionally violent clashes.
