Legendary cities: Córdoba

A spectacular documentary series looking at the most beautiful cities in the world.

Córdoba, the ancient capital of Al-Andalus, became the most beautiful city of the ancient arabic world. Due to its dry and hot climate, the inhabitants of the city, first the romans and later the muslims, adapted their homes by surrounding their houses with a ‘patio’, with a fountain in the center to collect the water from the rain. To access the house, the muslims later added a vestibule, and covered it in abundant vegetation to increase the feeling of freshness. This tradition continues today, and it is celebrated with visits to the patios once a year. Hundreds of people come to Cordoba to admire the beautifully decorated courtyards.

In the center of the city, the ancient Mosque stands in all its splendor, it’s a symbol of the architecture of its period. Today it’s a cathedral, merging christian and islamic cultures in one great work of art which reflects the complexity of history.

We explore the fascinating history of the city and discover how its heritage is still very present in the inhabitants’ daily lives.
