Legendary Homes and Hotels – Marseille Cité Radieuse: Le Corbusier’s Utopia

Listed by UNESCO as a world heritage site, the stunning Cité is a post-war building in Marseille: it housed the victims of the Vieux Port war, whose area had been completely destroyed. Designed by the famous Le Corbusier, it revolutionised architecture worldwide: the dimensions of this vertical village of 337 apartments were unprecedented at the time: 56 metres high, 137 metres long and 24 metres wide.

Revolutionary in its architecture, the building is also innovative in its concept; everything has been thought up to cultivate collective living: a school, shopping street, gym, cinema.

70 years after its inauguration, the inhabitants continue to live by the social utopia of its creator. The school opens its doors to residents, the commercial street welcomes visitors, and the historical “Corbuseans” strive to preserve the memory of this avant-garde building.
