Modern Hippies

They are bent on escaping a world built on consumerism and determined to make a life for themselves on the fringes of society- meet the “new” hippies. Nothing is too taboo for them, and they are happy to make their wildest dreams their reality. This film is a special look at two communities in the U.S.: ‘The Rainbow Family’ and ‘Burning Man’ community- and the people who are giving new life to their movements.

Following in the footsteps of the 70’s Wave in California, The Rainbow Family make up the new hippie generation. Alan and his friends live in an old camper van that they have revamped themselves, and spend their days traveling across America; no stress, no constraints.

Burning Man is an ephemeral community based in Nevada. For one week out of the year, 70 000 people come together to create a temporary utopia in the middle of the desert. There are no rules and no limits; outlandish behaviour is encouraged and the parties are non-stop.

An investigation into the heart of these two communities will reveal that in spite of their differences, these individuals are making their dreams a reality, and in creating their own utopias, are creating a world very far from the set norms and regulations of our own civilisation.
