The Third Reich in Private: Episode 3 – Living with the Horror

They lived in seclusion from their subjects, guarded around the clock by the security service. For a long time, little was known about the private lives of the Nazi leaders. It was only after the fall of the Third Reich that more and more details came to light: film footage and photos showing the everyday lives of Adolf Hitler, Eva Braun and Hermann Göring.

After the invasion of Poland and the beginning of the Second World War, not much changes at first in the private lives of the Nazi greats. After public appearances, Hitler repeatedly withdrew to his ‘Inner Circle’ on the Obersalzberg. Meanwhile, more and more European Jews were deported to the extermination factories in the East and lived in concentration camps such as Buchenwald. Terror and murder reigned there. Commander Karl Otto Koch leads a middle-class life nearby with his wife Ilse – his children play next door to the horror of the camp.
