They lived in seclusion from their subjects, guarded around the clock by the security service. For a long time, little was known about the private lives of the Nazi leaders. It was only after the fall of the Third Reich that more and more details came to light: film footage and photos showing the everyday lives of Adolf Hitler, Eva Braun and Hermann Göring. They document life on the Obersalzberg, where Hitler makes politically fatal decisions surrounded by his favourites. They show Göring on his huge ‘Carinhall’ estate, surrounded by precious objects and exotic animals. The Goebbels family’s country estate, where Magda dresses up the six children for propaganda while Joseph enjoys himself with young actresses in Babelsberg. Or Martin Bormann, who lives on the Berghof with his large family and quickly comes to influences Hitler’s decisions to a great extent. But they also show the everyday life of Germans under the dictatorship – frighteningly normal for those who agreed, unimaginably cruel for those who were persecuted.
This four-part documentary takes us behind the scenes of the Nazi state and looks back at the history of the women and men who were part of the court, played an important role in the power structure or in the apparatus of oppression. Remarkably original footage, some of which was even shot in colour, and rare photos from the private photo albums of Eva Braun, Hermann Göring and Ilse Koch, the ‘witch of Buchenwald’, casts new light on the private lives of the rulers of the Third Reich.
