Dangerous Roads: Rocky Mountains

In the Rocky Mountains to the East of the United States, the first storm of the season is in full force: strong winds and record snowfall have turned the roads into a giant ice rink. Emergency workers are on the front lines. The freezing temperatures and heavy snow create some of the most extreme traffic conditions in the world; from December to March, it can snow up to 2 metres a day. Accidents are very common: a recent blizzard, happening all too often in this area, leads to a pile-up of over 200 destroyed vehicles, with 30 people seriously injured and 6 dead.

The Rocky Mountains are an enormous mountain range of 3,000 kilometres, nearly three times the size of the Alps. Two highways, Interstate 80 and 90, connect the east and the west of the country. Known all over the world for its landscapes and nature reserves such as Yellowstone and Yosemite, in winter the Rocky Mountains become a death trap for millions of drivers.

For two months, we filmed these anonymous heroes who save lives every day. Scott and the crew from the highway department work around the clock to clear the road and prevent tragedies, rescuing stranded cars and triggering avalanches with explosives to avoid disaster.

What is the daily life of these seasoned professionals who risk their lives in the heart of the American Rocky Mountains?
