Dangerous Roads: Romania

Nestled between Ukraine and the Balkans, Romania is the most dangerous country in Europe in terms of road accidents, ahead of Bulgaria and Hungary. More than 2000 deaths and 40,000 serious injuries occur every year on the roads – the most in Europe.

On the side of the roads, thousands of crosses honour the memory of the victims. The cause is irresponsible drivers, who often mix alcohol and speed. But the state of the roads and the total absence of adapted infrastructure are also to blame. The only possible routes for commerce and tourism are these huge two-or three-lane national roads that pass through towns and villages. No separation of roads, no emergency lane, all interspersed with poorly signposted level crossings.

The deadliest road in Romania is the European 85, which connects the capital Bucharest to the Ukrainian border. In the country, nearly one out of three fatal accidents take place on this road. For over a month, we followed the daily life of E85 users.
