Dicing with Death: Bolivia – Comes the Floods

Bolivia is a country ravaged with torrential rain, flooding and landslides. It is no surprise that after all the money the country has spent on safe roads, it has turned out worthless. The Bolivian highways are reduced to mud and floods.

Edgar and his son are embarking on a long journey across the country to transport almonds to the processing plant. Crossing tributaries and flooded grounds as well as constant risk of getting stuck; getting to La Paz is an almighty challenge.

Almonds are one of the main industries in Bolivia. We trek into the depths of the Bolivian Amazon where a family of harvesters are collecting shells from giant almond trees. Their lives are constantly at risk from the threat of spiders, snakes, tarantulas and even falling shells, which can crack a skull immediately.

It is a country on the brink of a major natural disaster, be it flooding or landslides. Deforestation, too, causes huge environmental disruption.
