Landlocked and shrouded in historical mystery, Laos is home to dozens of forgotten tribes who reside in its vast rolling mountains and impenetrable jungles. The Kingdom of a Million Elephants is one of the last standing communist countries and we travel along the Ho Chi Minh trail that was used to transport weapons in the Vietnam War. The countryside is still littered with bombs dropped by the Americans and travelling requires vigilant drivers.
We adventure in trucks new and old, on the back of elephants, by car engine-powered speedboat and often on foot, scything through the jungle. Whether transporting 30 tonnes-worth of logs through the jungle to the city, bringing supplies to isolated villages with no transport links, or searching for hidden rose-wood, the stakes are high for these courageous drivers, and the pressure is on for a safe passage in ferocious conditions.
