They carry carts just like horses, they steal coal straight from moving trucks or capture cobras to charm them. In the Calcutta region there are many who do odd jobs to survive, often at the risk of their health.
Even if these risky professions are considered traditional by workers, they are completely against the government’s vision of a modern India and so they’re trying to make them disappear.
Despite a kind of attachment to their activities, these small businesses are mainly a way to escape poverty. Is it really by choice that men hold on to this way of life ?
