Almost Perfect Crimes: The Stavisky Affair

This series investigates the most notorious, infamous and terrifying crimes in French history. Cases that – in may cases – inspired films and novels. Join Danielle Thiéry, the first female chief superintendent, on a journey to the dark side of human nature.

At the start of the 1930s, France felt the effects of the great economic crisis that had struck America not long before. At this precarious time, they discovered that the Crédit Municipal de Bayonne had issued fake savings bonds. A total of 240 million francs had been embezzled. All fingers pointed at a very rich businessman: Serge Alexandre Stavisky. Known to the police services, he had to that point benefitted from the protection of his powerful knowledge network. Having fled to Chamonix, the con man was finally captured by the police. The official story is that, in the end, he took his own life. But the press and public opinion suspected that he had been executed in what would become a huge scandal that shook the political sphere to its core.
